One of the most frequently asked questions by orthodontic patients is “After my braces are attached, my teeth started to shake, is this normal?” is happening. It’s not unusual to feel like you have loose teeth with braces. When you feel the teeth moving with the braces, that’s a good sign that your orthodontic treatment is working properly.
How Do Braces Work?
Braces are orthodontic appliances used to straighten teeth. The term “braces” includes metal brackets that are attached to the front of the teeth and the wire (archwire) that runs through these brackets. Brackets hold the wire in place and are used to create wire tension and apply pressure to the teeth. This pressure moves the teeth to a slightly different position from their original position. Every time you see your orthodontist, they will adjust the brace to help your teeth get into the correct position.
Orthodontists to move teeth:
It exerts pressure to push your teeth in one direction by stretching and compressing your tooth’s periodontal ligament (the bond that holds the tooth in place).
.The pressure-receiving side of the tooth is pushed.
.The non-pressurized side of the tooth is stretched.
On the stretched side, osteoblasts (bone-growing cells) start working to regrow bone as your teeth move to a new location.
.On the jammed side of the tooth, osteoclasts (the cells that remove the bone) start working to regrow bone as your teeth move to a new location.
.This stretching and compression of the periodontal ligament opens up more room for the tooth to move. By putting pressure on the teeth over months, bone is continually broken down and rebuilt to accommodate movement until correct alignment is achieved.
Why Do Your Teeth Feel Loose When Wearing Braces?
Your teeth also feel loose with braces, as they are technically loose. However, loose teeth with braces are not the same as rocking milk teeth before they fall out.
With braces, your tooth stays securely attached to the periodontal ligament attached to your jaw. The feeling of looseness is caused by the stretching and compression of the tooth, which creates a new and larger space for the tooth. Once your tooth is still securely in place and the tooth is in its new position and the bone has reconstructed, your tooth will no longer feel loose.
So, is the shaking of the teeth something to be worried about while wearing braces? No. Feeling the teeth moving with the braces is a normal indication that the braces are doing their job.
Can Braces Cause Your Teeth to Shake and Fall Out?
Braces themselves do not cause your teeth to fall out. As we mentioned above, braces treatment works by moving teeth that require a normal amount of loosening into a new position. But braces will not be a direct cause of teeth falling out.
However, poor oral hygiene with braces can cause teeth to fall out. Poor oral hygiene can cause gingivitis and gum disease, which can develop into periodontal disease. Periodontal disease can also lead to less support around your tooth. If not handled by the dentist or periodontist, this can cause the tooth to fall out.
It is important to keep your teeth clean with braces and to practice good oral hygiene. Your orthodontist and dentist will provide you with helpful tips and resources for keeping your teeth and gums clean.
