Tooth Extraction Process
The type of tooth extraction you have depends on your personal situation. Here are some of the most common tooth extraction procedures:
Simple Shooting
A simple extraction is done when the tooth is fully visible and not chipped, cracked or broken. The tooth is loosened with an instrument called an elevator and then pulled with forceps.
Surgical Shot
If a tooth is not protruding from the gumline or is broken, it may need to be surgically extracted to remove it. During this procedure, a small incision is made at the gum line to remove the impacted tooth or tooth fragment.
How Long Does Tooth Extraction Take?
We will wait to start the procedure until you are comfortable and your anesthesia takes full effect. You will be given a mild anesthetic to numb the area around your tooth. Depending on your procedure, you may also choose sedation to help you relax during your treatment.
Once you’re comfortable and lethargic, we can take the shot. Loosening the tooth takes between ten and thirty minutes, depending on your personal situation.
The socket is then washed, sealed, and protected, which may include removing unnecessary tissue, flattening the tissues, and sealing the area with sutures and gauze. This step can take anywhere from ten to thirty minutes.
If you have had a stronger anesthetic than the local numbing agent, you may need to wait for the effect to wear off before going home.
In general, a tooth extraction appointment can take one to several hours to complete. Our team will provide you with a time estimate before planning your treatment so you can plan your day accordingly.
