If you have pain in the gum area around a dental bridge, it may be time to see your dentist. There are several things around the dental bridge that can cause pain, and it’s important to make an appointment right away. A flexible schedule and long hours are offered to assist patients who need to be seen immediately.
There can be several different reasons for feeling pain around the bridge. Detailed examination of the teeth, gums, and bridge will be required to determine the cause and necessary treatment. Your doctor will ask questions about when the pain started and how long the pain has lasted. X-rays may be needed to get a clear picture of your teeth and gums.
Rot or Infection
Sometimes food or debris can get stuck between your teeth and cause decay. This can cause pain in the gum area of your bridge. If your bridge is not seated properly, this can cause bacteria and plaque to get under or between the teeth and cause pain or infection.
Sensitivity
Some sensitivities are common with a newly installed bridge. Patients may experience sensitivity to heat or cold, but this goes away after a few weeks.
When to See the Dentist
Patients may experience some pain after the bridge procedure, but this will pass after a few days. If you notice that your pain lasts for more than a few days, we recommend that you call your doctor. This may indicate that you have an improperly fitting dental bridge or a potential infection. Leaving an infection untreated can cause more serious problems and should be addressed immediately.
